At Bar Carlo, we continue a 50-year family tradition of innovation started by pioneer Carlo Sabbadini. Bar Carlo serves simple, hand-prepared Italian food and cicchetti, which can be enjoyed all day. Our menu is constantly rotating to ensure the freshest ingredients, served in the same no fuss manor that Carlo became known for.

To Eat

Carlo Sabbadini arrived in Melbourne in 1949. By the late 1970s his life’s work, the Waiters’ Club, was a Melbourne institution, a place for Italian waiters, and late night workers from across the city to play cards and enjoy a simple Italian meal over a glass of wine.  Downstairs, the revolutionary Meyers Place Bar pioneered Melbourne’s laneway bar scene from the early 1990s, with a modern industrial aesthetic created with materials and ideas sourced almost entirely from local Melbourne history.

We treasure Carlo’s legacy as a family heirloom, passed down from grandfather to granddaughter.  We believe the simple things in life are often the best – good coffee, good wine, simple cocktails, and the infamous spritz – all enjoyed alongside our hand-prepared cicchetti.
